UK Somali Student

UK Somali Student (USS) is a UK based charity run entirely by university student volunteers. USS believes that education is key in healing a nation. Our express aim is to elevate the educational attainment of underprivileged Somali students both in the diaspora and back home in the Somali horn. We currently run two programmes: A tutoring service in the UK and a scholarship program in the Horn of Africa.

Tutoring

Our tutoring program provides guidance in helping our GCSE tutees successfully navigate key milestones along their educational journey. We draw upon the high social capital of our tutors to inspire aspiration and instil an aptitude for learning thus driving academic success. Our long-term aim is to build the capacity for social mobility of the UK Somali community.

Gift of Education

Our scholarship program - Gift of Education - is aimed at widening access to tertiary education for Somali students from orphanages or poor backgrounds in the Horn of Africa. Commencing September 2011 and every year thereafter we will provide scholarships for 200 students across 10 universities in the Horn of Africa including:

1) Amoud University
2) Benadir University
3) East Africa University
4) Galkayo University
5) Kismayo University
6) Mogadishu University
7) Nugaal University
8) Puntland State University
9) Sanaag University
10) University of Hargeisa
