MSD helps New Zealanders to help themselves to be safe, strong and independent.

It's a big job - we're tackling some of the big issues in society, like reducing long term welfare dependency and preventing family violence and youth offending.

MSD's work touches the lives of more than one million New Zealanders. This is not work we do alone. We work closely with other government agencies, non-government organisations, advisory and industry groups, and communities and iwi. Together we aim to make a positive and lasting difference in the lives of New Zealanders.

MSD is New Zealand's largest government department employing more than 10,000 people in 200 locations around the country. To provide our diverse range of services in the best possible way, the Ministry of Social Development comprises of a number of key agencies including Child, Youth and Family (CYF), Community Investment (CI), Ministry of Youth Development (MYD), and the Office for Disability Issues and the Office for Senior Citizens as well as our Service Delivery arm.
