Allegheny County

Allegheny County is home to some of the world’s leading businesses and organizations in the fields of advanced manufacturing, information & communications technology, health care & life sciences, finance & business services, education & research, and energy & environmental solutions. And yes – proudly – we still make steel here.

During the last 30 years, our region has undergone a tremendous economic and environmental transformation. We have worked hard to create an economic climate in which businesses and entrepreneurs may thrive, and our results are paying off. Throughout the economic downturn, Allegheny County’s unemployment rate has consistently been two percentage points below the national average, and our foreclosure rate has been among the nation’s lowest.

Out of the nation’s 100 biggest labor markets, Pittsburgh is one of only 13 that have regained all of the jobs they lost during the Great Recession. Statistics like this led Time Magazine to call Pittsburgh the “one economic bright spot on Main Street” in the midst of the recession.
